Lymphatic Drainage Massage: What It Is and Who It May Suit

What is lymphatic drainage massage?

Your lymphatic system helps move fluid around your body, relying on movement and breathing rather than a pump. Lymphatic drainage uses very light, skin-stretching strokes to encourage that natural fluid movement, and it shouldn't be uncomfortable. It can support fluid movement and give you a calm, restorative treatment.

Who may it suit?

You might consider lymphatic drainage if you:

  • Have swelling or heaviness after an injury

  • Are recovering from surgery and have been cleared by your surgeon or doctor

  • Are pregnant and noticing swelling in your legs, feet or hands

  • Want a gentler style of massage as part of your recovery or rehab

Who should check with their doctor first?

It isn't suitable for everyone, for example if you have an active infection, a suspected blood clot or certain heart or kidney conditions. Sudden or one-sided swelling, especially with pain, warmth or redness, needs a doctor first. Every appointment starts with a health history chat to check it's right for you.

What to expect at your appointment

  1. A chat first. Your therapist asks about your health history, symptoms and goals.

  2. Gentle treatment. Slow, light strokes over the areas that need attention. Many people nearly fall asleep.

  3. A plan. Advice afterwards, and follow-up sessions if they make sense for you.
